Zinc House

This house sits in a stunning, semi-rural location with a large garden looking onto farmland and woodland beyond. The house itself was a good-sized bungalow with converted loft spaces, however it suffered from lots of previous extensions and adaptations that meant there wasn’t a coherent connection between the living spaces, and the bedrooms were small and not functional. We were struck by how the house didn’t currently connect to the garden and the views and we wanted to make this a top priority.

We achieved this by replacing an existing conservatory with a new extension and then opening up the rear of the house to create an open-plan, kitchen, dining and living room, which also connected to a snug living room and generous utility and pantry. A bifold window with window seat below and a large, glazed sliding door create a direct connection to the garden that was previously missing. We also increased the depth of the first floor which created much more usable bedrooms and a master suite.

A further design move was to introduce zinc-clad box dormers to the rear, which gave space back to the bedrooms and opened up the view to the landscape beyond. The whole house now connects seamlessly together and the journey from hallway to living spaces and garden is simple, elegant and functional. The front door opens onto the glazed internal doors which connect to the open-plan living spaces and the patio and garden beyond. This is now the perfect family home for spending time together, whether indoors or outdoors.
