This house is a cherished family home. However, none of the downstairs spaces seemed to talk to one another. The living room was too long and thin, the kitchen was disconnected from the dining and the lean-to conservatory was on its last legs! Also, the large garden was almost impossible to access. We needed to create coherence and connections between the different spaces in the house, along with an office and an all-important connection to the garden.
We needed to find a way to make the most of the existing spaces already in the house and then creatively extend to add the additional spaces needed. We were able to close off some of the space to create clearly defined rooms and then open connections between these spaces. This included a more usable porch with lot of storage, an office / music room, walk-in pantry, utility room, kitchen and living space, dining room and snug.
The entrance hall now leads to the most wonderful open-plan space at the rear of the house which has views of the garden from every angle. The seemingly unassuming entrance to the house belies spaces beyond. The full-height open corner glazed doors flood the space with light and give the most amazing views of the garden. The space also enjoys long reaching connections between the spaces which didn’t exist previously. Life in the house has been completely transformed, and this allows the family to focus on enjoying the space and garden rather than working around the problems that existed before.
