On the face of it, this house was already a good size with a large entrance hall, good sized bedrooms and lots of living space. The problem was, the living spaces were poorly laid out and didn’t relate to one another, there was lots of circulation space, and the garden was only accessible from a conservatory extension linked to the kitchen. We could see the potential to unify these spaces and open them up to the back garden. We also needed to find a way to improve the access to these spaces from the rest of the house.
We were able to create the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space by demolishing the old conservatory extension, building a small infill extension, and opening up an internal wall. We also removed an internal corridor to the home office and gave this space back to the kitchen. These relatively simple moves transformed the space and allowed us to introduce an enormous, glazed sliding door which completely opens the space to the garden.
The kitchen, with its generous island, is now the heart of the home with a comfortable lounge and dining space giving onto the patio and garden beyond. The space links seamlessly to the outside seating and dining spaces too and the whole extension works really well for the family. When the sun shines and the sliding doors are opened up to the garden, the spaces feel like one and the same and the garden is enjoyed and accessed so much more than before.
